When you address the Father, how do you speak? How do you talk to God? We talked about the different positions of prayer in our previous lesson. This week I’m talking about how you see God. Scripture talks about talking to God as we speak to our earthly fathers.
This is an easy fun exercise if you have or have had a good relationship with your dad. You can run through your head how the conversation goes when you asked for the keys to car, $20 for a night out at the movies, advice in school or on the job. What conversation is off limits with your dad? I suppose that depends a little on the dad in question, but your heavenly father is MORE open to hearing from you than any earthly father. I like to think of myself as a good dad. I love my kids and have tried to bring them up in the training and instruction of Lord. My God reminds me in the gospel of Matthew that even though I’m EVIL (compared to the Heavenly Father) I can still give good gifts to my children. How much more will God the Father answer my kids’ prayers in a way that is a blessing for their eternal good!
On the other hand, I think you can imagine how it can be difficult to understand the joy of the Address of the Lord’s Prayer if you don’t know what it’s like to have a God fearing father. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, but I think there is a reason that God reveals himself as Father Son and Holy Spirit. He does this because he knows that the father – child relationship is a strong one. This can be a window of what our relationship can be with God. It can help us as we address the Father.
