“Look up!”, was the advice of the psalmist. That is where our help comes from. From the make of heaven and earth. How do we know? That is where faith comes in. Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. It is a sure certainty that what God says is true. We simply take God at his word.
Let’s dig a little deeper. What exactly are we sure of when it comes to our faith. The chief subject that we are sure of is eternal life! Let’s go straight to our final breath. When you close your eyes for the last time you will not die – not forever. Your body will cease to live, but your soul will be with Jesus in heaven. It is an open question (we don’t know the EXACT answer) concerning you soul after death. Some believe that when we die our soul goes to sleep. After all, how many times does Jesus talk about death as a sleep (Luke 8:52, Matt 9:24)? The other side of the coin is that in Revelation the souls under the altar are keenly aware of the suffering of the saints. In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus both know what is going on in heaven. Those two examples could be illustrative. I see Jesus promise to the thief on the cross fulfilled – “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” When we die we fall asleep in death. The Christian soul goes to Jesus’ side in heaven, and we are blissfully unaware of the passage of time until the world ends and the dead are raised imperishable. At that time we will awake with our glorified bodies and look up!
