The conquest of the Promised Land was commanded by the Lord, but this was not home – not yet. How would they breach the walls of enormous cities? There were people who already lived there! They wouldn’t just move out of the way for God’s people. That doesn’t begin to scratch the surface for all of the internal struggles facing the nation of Israel. Join us Wednesday mornings at 10:30 AM as we study the book of Joshua. Much of the content of the class will come from the People’s Bible Commentary on Joshua. You may purchase your copy HERE.
HERE is the link for Zoom.
Can’t make it in person? You can participate online over Zoom. Maybe you’ve never joined a small group Bible study before? You are welcome to pop in anonymously! You don’t need to turn on your mic or camera, just watch and listen to the class. Give it a try!
Lesson 1: Strength from the Lord
Every place where you set your foot – that is a blanket promise and that is also where the territory would spread for God’s people. Just start walking! God would grant the victory.
Lesson 1: Strength from the Lord
Lesson 2: Rahab Protects the Spies
All the people are melting in fear – wouldn’t it be easier to walk in with a plate of cookies? That might be what we do for new neighbors, but remember, this was a campaign of conquest.
Lesson 2: Rahab Protects the Spies
Lesson 3: Crossing the Jordan
Tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things – maybe I should put that in a Saturday email preparing the congregation for worship.
Lesson 4: Two Memorials
How do you remember important events? I suppose we have anniversaries to celebrate weddings, birthdays, and even baptisms. How do you remember the day God made the river dry up? Not with just one pile of stones – TWO!
Lesson 5: Covenant Renewed
God’s Old Testament people had detailed instructions on how to live and worship, but they didn’t always follow those instructions. We have more freedom in our lives of Christian worship, but the point is the same – worship the Lord. Anytime an apostacy happens there needs to be a renewal!
Lesson 6: The Commander of the Army of the Lord
The conquest of Canaan is about to begin! But first a visit from the one who is truly leading the troops. Whose side are you on?
Lesson 6: The Commander of the Army of the Lord
Lesson 7: The Conquest of Jericho
Victory! We’ve been waiting for this day all week! All the marching, what must have the people in the city have been thinking as they watched the daily procession?
Lesson 7: The Conquest of Jericho
Lesson 8: Achan’s Sin
Israel just celebrated their greatest victory! How could they be defeated like this? There was something wrong in the camp. God is serious about his commands.
Lesson 9: Israel Strikes Back
After suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Canaanites at Ai, Israel looks to restart the campaign of conquest. God’s got a plan.
Lesson 10: Twin Peaks
It’s time for blessings and curses. That might not be high on your to-do list today, but this was burning in the back of Joshua’s mind as he pauses the conquest of the promised land to worship.
Lesson 11: The Gibeonite Deception
If you can’t beat ‘em… How does that phrase end? There are nations in Canaan that can see the handwriting on the wall. Not all of them try to oppose Israel with an army.
Lesson 11: The Gibeonite Deception
Lesson 12: The Sun Stands Still
Ever wish you had a few more hours in the day to git ‘er done? So did Joshua. When the Lord is on your side even daylight isn’t an issue. Israel continues the conquest of the Promised Land.
Lesson 12: The Sun Stands Still
Lesson 13: The North Remembers
There is one last area in Canaan that needs to be subdued, the north. They have strong cities, armies for days, and chariots! Has God finally met his match with these pagans?
Lesson 13: The North Remembers
Lesson 14: YOU Get Some Land
The big fighting is over. YOU get some land! And YOU get some land! It’s time to pass out the land to the tribes. BUT this didn’t mean the fighting was done.
Lesson 15: The Way The West Was Divided
Ready to roll the dice? We don’t know exactly how lots were cast in the ancient world, but we do know that this didn’t mean they left the division up to chance. God controlled what each tribe was given.
Lesson 15: The Way The West Was Divided
Lesson 16: Joseph’s Kids
Why do the children of Joseph get special treatment? How is that fair? That isn’t really the point. They were included among the twelve children of Jacob, so they get land..
Lesson 17: The Final Seven
We continue passing out land in these next couple chapters of Joshua. For each tribe this was still an important moment.
Lesson 18: Cities of Refuge
Where can you go where no one knows your name? …where you can be safe from the blood avenger!? The City of Refuge!
Lesson 19: Misunderstanding
“Oh, that’s what you meant!” Why does our God encourage us to take our neighbors words and actions in the kindest possible way? So we can live in peace.
Lesson 20: Fare Thee Well
You’ve been waiting the whole book for this phrase: “As for me and my house…”
