Angels 101 is a little teaser class on the eight week series that will start up in Advent.
I wanted to touch on a couple of the questions. First is when I asked if angels were eternal. Most of the church nodded their head in approval. So often we associate angels with our God. That’s not bad! BUT the angels are not part of the God-head. They are -in fact- created beings just like you and me!
For starters if something or someone is eternal that means that it never had a beginning or an end. God always was and always will be. Created things and people can’t be eternal. Everything except God had a beginning – including angels. What else does that mean? Angels can’t be everywhere at once. They aren’t omnipresent. This is good! Satan can’t be everywhere at once, neither can good angels. However there are ALOT of angels, so they don’t have be everywhere at once. Angels are illocal – that means they a REALLY fast. Angels know alot, but they don’t know everything. As far as we know they don’t know the future – at least not everything. The Bible tells use that they don’t know when the Last Day will be. Finally, angels are very powerful, but they are not omnipotent. Can they make people sick, control the weather, and influence people. We don’t know exactly, but a quick scan of Job 1 and 2 will be a terrifying glimpse into the world of angels and their power.
It’s important to not give angels any more credit than they deserve. They are not worthy of your praise or worship. We can give thanks to God for angels as they serve him and us – the elect who will inherit salvation for Jesus’ sake.
