WELS Missions – Hispanic Outreach Presentation was offered to our church on Sunday by WELS Mission Counselor Tim Flunker.
The contents of the presentation focused on a four step approach to Intercultural Mission, Message and Method.
- Step One – Make Contact
- Step Two – Create Relationship
- Step Three – Always Tell the Truth
- Step Four – Stay on Target
At Star of Bethlehem we have done step one, Make Contacts, in spades. Since the first of the year, we have served 464 unique Hispanic community member families with gifts of food. What we are working toward is the next step – Created Relationship. In this step we will offer English Improvement Opportunities for Hispanics who have a basic understanding of the English language but struggle with the verb. These classes make a HUGE impact with the families and open the door for witnessing opportunities.
Those witnessing opportunities are built into the Hispanic culture. Baptisms and quinceaneras are very important to Hispanic families. These are ceremonies offered through the church. The Romans Catholic attaches a price tag to them – $300~ for a baptism and ~$1,200 for a quinceanera. We can offer these services to families for no charge. Often when part of a family has a good experience with a church the rest of their extended family looks for the same services. This is just one way that Jesus can be shared with Hispanic families.
