VIC – Genesis 28 – Jacob’s Ladder is a grace filled story of one of God’s children who struggled most of his life. Much of the reason for his struggles was because he seemed to live by the slogan – God helps those who help themselves. This phrase is not in the Bible, but I bet you know or have met someone (or maybe this is you!) who lives this way.
Always Come Home
Just for a few week’s now all of my kids are gone. They are either moved out and on their own or away at school. I love it when my kids comes home for any reason! As a father I have poured my like into my kids and so I am proud of who they are and how God has blessed them. Jacob couldn’t go home. His brother hated him. His dad was furious with him because Jacob had cheated his twin brother Esau out of his blessing. There is more to that story that we won’t go into. His mom wasn’t blameless either! She was in on the whole scheme. The problem was that Jacob thought that he needed to do anything in everything to make God’s promise come true.
God is bigger than…
God does not need your help. If God promises you something, that doesn’t mean you need to break every law in the book to make it happen. God can take care of himself. As Jacob lays his head down on the rock for a pillow he was given a dream of angels ascending and descending to and from heaven. Jacob didn’t have very much to go on – the Bible had not been written, so God gave him this vision as a promise and a comfort. The promised savior of the world – a savior Jacob needed badly – would come through his offspring. He wasn’t even married yet! If God makes a promise, we don’t need to worry about how he will keep it.
