Foundations of Faith – The Lord’s Supper

Foundations of Faith – The Lord’s Supper is the second half of our study on the sacraments.  We are back from our Lent break where we spent time on the Passion accounts from the Gospel of John.

Brothers don’t shake hands…

Which is more meaningful?  A hug or a handshake?  I think normally we would say that a hug is a more meaningful expression of affection.  So also, it’s easy for God to forgive.  It’s hard for me to believe it because I’m such a terrible person.  (Ask my dog sometime, he follows me around the house.)  God doesn’t leave us in uncertainty.  He pulls out all of the stops to make sure that we know of his love.  Yes, there is the steady stream of communication in his word, but there are two other ways God promises to communicate his love.  The first we covered in our last lesson – baptism.  The second is the Lord’s Supper.  In it God give us his body and blood in, with, and under the bread and the wine.  These gifts are for no one else – they are for you.  Know that you are forgive and loved.

Close Not Closed

The Lord’s Supper is strong medicine for your sin sick soul.  This is a very good thing for the sinner who has properly examined him or herself.  This can also be damaging to the unbeliever who approaches the Lord’s table.  How?  If you come to the Lord’s Supper living in an open sin that is dangerous to your soul, I would be telling you – great, keep on doing it.  That’s dangerous.  So also, the Bible tells us that we do not want to thoughtlessly receive the body and blood of our Lord.  Unbelievers will not receive the forgiveness of sins.  For it is by grace you have been saved through faith.
