Foundations of Faith – The Home

Foundations of Faith – The Home takes us into the topics of all things marriage, kids, and yes, sadly divorce.

Three Reasons

There are three reasons that God offers for a marriage to end.  I don’t know that I would say these are God pleasing.  Divorce isn’t something that God wants.  However, our world is broken because there are broken sinners living in it.  Sometimes that brokenness impacts the family of God too!  The three reasons that God would allow divorce are unfaithfulness, abuse, and malicious desertion.

Unfaithfulness

God calls us to love our spouse and to only give that love our spouse.  When that doesn’t happen, the marriage bond is broken.  That doesn’t necessarily mean the marriage must end, but often times trust is so broken that the marriage cannot continue.

Abuse

God has not created you to be an emotional, physical, or spiritual punching bag.  If you are in an abusive relationship, leave!  I have seen that people who refuse to leave sometimes end up blaming God.  God never told you that you must stay in that relationship.  Walk away.

Malicious Desertion

This can be kind of an odd catch all for divorce.  I will say that I have seen couples who have not spoken a word to each other for a year!  By the time they came into my office, the marriage was over.  They were able to relate to me months of real or imagined wrongs done by their spouse.  This is exhausting.  Couples need to know how to forgive each other.  If a couple starts each day under the identity of being a redeemed child of God, it’s harder for the devil to gain a foothold and for things to spiral out of control.
