Taboo – What about

Taboo – What about… addresses some of the questions that commonly come up.  Four of those that we took a look at are:

  • Am I born this way?
  • Didn’t Jesus say, “Don’t Judge!”
  • Can you be a gay Christian?
  • WHY after two thousand years does this issue divide families, churches, and denominations?

All of these are covered in the Bible study.  Let’s consider the last one for the purposes of this blog.

Why this?  Why Now?

Homosexuality is not new.  Jump into any text on the ancients, Greek, Roman, or otherwise and there was plenty of homosexuality.  This covered all ages and both sexes.  So why do you think that now in the 21st century the reactions for and against homosexuality have reached a fevered pitch?

In his book Novonty tells the story of a conversation he had with a Pastor Allen who is an openly homosexual clergyman.  He share that God’s love extends to all people including homosexuals from every walk of life.  What do you think Pastor Allen’s reaction was to this olive leaf from our God?  You’re attacking the core of my being.

Identity is Everything

This exchange is instructive because we’re not talking about an LGBTQIA+ issue anymore.  Pastor Allen was offended by what God says in his word because he had made his sexuality his identity.  On it’s face that sounds ridiculous.  It isn’t your job, your looks, your background, your culture, or your religion that gives you meaning and purpose.  All that mattered to Pastor Allen was his sexuality.  This is a meaningless, empty thought.  Yet this is the message that our society is sending to everyone!  It’s no wonder a generation of children and adults are confused and adrift.  There is no purpose in pleasure.
