To the Lord a thousand years are like a day and a day is like a thousand years. Our God is eternal and timeless. Looking at 2 Peter 3 we see that one day God will end time itself when he ends the world. Despite what the scoffers might say, God is not slow. He is patient, wanting everyone to come to repentance.
There is urgency in Peter’s message. We’ve spent a couple weeks on the flood recently. In this chapter Peter references the flood as a good reminder of what will happen on the Last Day. Just like everything was destroyed by water in the Great Flood, so also everything will be destroyed by fire when our God ends the world.
That doesn’t mean that we need to go find something to hide behind. Do not lose sleep over God’s promise to end the world. All of the promises of destruction are true, but Christian, understand that when God ends the world, you have a one way ticket straight to heaven. Peter is sincere when he says that we can look forward to that day!
I have to tell you that I’m not looking forward to getting old. My body is slowing down. Everything doesn’t work quite as well as it used to and I really have no complaints at 45. I know that there are people who have it far worse than me. That said, being in glory with my Lord is something to look forward to! No more tears or hunger or disease will be wonderful! It is with an eye to the sky that I join with the Apostle John and say, “Come quickly, Lord!”
