The Glory of Jesus SDR – The Upper Room might seem a little wordy for a title, but I think it works. The passion account isn’t new. Jesus’ suffering death and resurrection are what the seasons of Lent and Easter are all about! Growing up I always listened to the passion accounts. By passion we mean intense suffering. These were a mash up of all the four gospels giving us a harmony, as complete a picture as could be mustered on the last hours of Jesus life.
And in the upper room there were a number of different events that happen. In our worship on Sunday we used the Visual Bible according to the Gospel of John. Click HERE to start watching. We go for almost nine minutes. It is a dramatized version of the Revised Standard Version of the Gospel of John. Every word that is spoken is from the Bible. And nothing is added! What is added is the interpretation of the events, a screen play of everything that happens.
This Bible study will walk us through some of these details. For example we have the institution of the Lord’s Supper. There is plenty of misunderstanding as to what Jesus meant when he said – “This is my body; this is my blood.” The words are fairly simple. The Apostle Paul helps us narrow down what those word mean when he talks about the manner in which we receive the Sacrament of the Altar. In 1 Corinthians 11:27 Paul writes, Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. This would seem to beg the question, how can we possibly sin against something, if it is not there. This is also when your senses and your reason push back – shouldn’t I be able to taste and smell and feel Jesus body and blood if it was REALLY there? We describe it in this way. Jesus’ body and blood are in, with, and under the bread and the wine. We can’t taste it or perceive it using any other sense, but we know it’s there because we take our Lord at his word.
