Taboo – God and Transgender is the final lesson in our series. We close out our Pride Month series with a look at transgenderism. This is almost a completely different topic than what we have been covering the first four weeks with homosexuality. The transgender community doesn’t feel that their brains match up with their body. We’ll see how they aren’t alone. The greatest help they can find is Jesus.
Don’t Feel Right
What would it be like if you didn’t feel comfortable in your own skin? What if when people called you the opposite gender, just based on your appearance? And when that happened you loved it! It made your whole day. For whatever reason you started confused, but now you feel like you don’t belong – not as in society – as in you don’t belong in your own skin.
Actions
Some people who do this try a few things to make it better. These are from Novotny’s book, Taboo.
- You could just deal with it and hope it goes away, which it does for many kids as they grow older.
- Or you could change your outfit to experiment with clothing normally worn by the other gender, hoping that what you see in the mirror feels better to your brain.
- Or you could change your ID and ask others to use a new name that lines up with your felt gender.
- Or you could change your hormones, taking puberty blockers or testosterone boosters that would alter your body in various ways.
- Or you could go all the way and surgically change your body, your facial structure, your voice, your private parts, etc., so that your body would match your brain.
Reactions
I should tell you that we’re dealing with between 0.3 and 0.6 percent of the population. That’s still more than a million people in America. That feeling of not belonging means there can be a war raging in their brains. This is so painful that for the fraction of the percentage of the population 42% ATTEMPT suicide. Of those who went with the last option on the list, their rate of attempted suicide sky rocketed 12x! No matter what you may think about the topic, this is a group of people who need the love of Jesus. These people need you to reflect Jesus into their lives.
