VIC – Exodus 3 shoots us forward 80 years! The first 40 years he spent as a prince of Egypt. The second 40 were a little more low key. Moses is a shepherd with a wife and kids. What he’s about to find out through this face to face meeting with God is that he’s about to start a new career.
Prince of Sheep
There are many good things you can learn while watching sheep. Patience is a good place to start. A few million people would be hard to deal with trying his patience. Sheep are defenseless animals and need constant protection. Moses would have learned his way around the wilderness, how to survive in harsh conditions. These qualities would be quite the feather in his cap with 40 years of wandering in his future.
The Angel of the Lord
As Moses walks up to the burning bush we don’t have enough information right away to answer the basic question every time we see the Angel of the Lord in Scripture. The question we need to ask is, is this an angel or is this the Lord? When a human comes face to face with an angel, the first thing the person normally does is to hit the deck. They go down to their knees in fear. There is a heavenly being right front and center. When this happens, the angel immediately rebukes the person. “What are you doing?! Get up! People are watching! Who do you think I am? God or something?! I am an angel.” When a person comes into God’s presence the same initial reaction normally ensues, but God tells them to stay there. The ground is a good place to be. Oh, and take off your shoes. The ground is holy. Don’t look at me, no one may see me and live.
