Taboo – Suicide rounds out our mental health study to start off the year.  This sensitive topic touches almost 13 million Americans every year.  Not all of those people are successful in an attempt, but they seriously consider it.

Give Up Heaven

Does a person who commits suicide give up heaven? Pastor Kurt Ebert, who later wrote about the tragedy in his family, is interested in that question. He was downstairs when he heard the gunshot. Scrambling to his feet, he ran to the stairs, where he met his son Nathan. Nathan was clutching his chest, pleading, “I’m sorry, Dad. I love God. I’m sorry.” And then he died.

He did what?!

“He did what?” Nathan did what? The pastor’s son did what? The preacher didn’t dance around the taboo issue. But the sermon ended with a similar question. He did what? Jesus did what? He loved Nathan. He forgave Nathan. He saved Nathan. HERE is the Ebert funeral sermon.

13 Reasons Why

The Netflix show 13 Reasons gave the reasons why the fictional character Hannah Baker took her own life. There is no reason to kill yourself.  To believe otherwise is a lie from the faither of lies.  Here are 13 reason why you shouldn’t.

  1. God loves you – John 3:16
  2. God has a plan for you – I know the plans I have for you.  AND Jeremiah, the prophet who wrote those uber encouraging words also wrote, Why did I ever come out of the womb?
  3. This emotion will end – Emotions are like waves.  They come and sweep over you.  But then they pass. Rick Warren in the wake the suicide of his son.
  4. We would love the real you – Romans 5:8
  5. Suicide is sin – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  6. Suicide is selfish – 1 Corinthians 15:5
  7. I need you – Help people through Jesus
  8. We need you – You are part of the body of Christ, 1 Corinthians 12:22
  9. They need you – You can show God’s love by being an object of grace.  Did you know elderly men have the highest rate of suicide?
  10. God knows too – Matthew 26:38
  11. God is with you – Hebrews 13:5
  12. God’s got you – Psalm 31:15
  13. God forgives you – Romans 10:13
