Evangelism – Reluctance gets us right to the edge. I think I need to rearrange the socks in my sock drawer. The list of excuses to NOT tell someone about Jesus is long and creative. Why is that? Today we’ll consider the reasons we are reluctant to share the gospel. We’ll walk the path with the Apostle Peter from Luke 5.
Easy
Peter didn’t have a problem with Jesus preaching from the boat. There is nothing dangerous or risky about it. Jesus was an incredible preacher and everyone wanted to hear him. I don’t think anyone has a problem watching someone walking into our church or even sit next to us in church.
Hard
Put out in deep water. Lord, I’ve been working all night, but because it’s you, I’ll do it. Hold on – you want me to do what now? That’s scary. I can’t talk to anyone. At all. I wish I could, but I’ve never done it before. There are many excuses that jump into our heads when it becomes personal. But, remember this isn’t your idea. The Lord calls to you. Trust me. Tell you’re neighbor. They may not like what you have to say, but God promises that his word will not return to him empty. It will achieve the purpose that he sends it. And, yes, he’ll use you to send that message.
Scary
Go away from me Lord! I’m a sinner! Peter knew that he was in the presence of the Lord Almighty and it scared him. I think this is a healthy point to remember. What are you afraid of? That we’re entrusted with the precious truths of the Bible or… people might think that we’re odd. It is scary and there are real risks to sharing the gospel, but they are all worth it.
