Evangelism – Friendship Witnessing walks us through the most effective means for sharing Jesus for two thousand years. Who introduced you to Jesus? For many Christians, the answer is not a famous preacher or a stranger standing on a street corner. It is a parent, friend, coworker, pastor, or neighbor—someone they knew and trusted.
Look The Lamb of God
John 1 provides a beautiful picture of this kind of friendship evangelism. John the Baptist pointed two of his disciples toward Jesus, declaring, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When they began following Jesus, he did not pressure them into making an immediate confession of faith. Instead, he invited them to spend time with him: “Come, and you will see.”
After Andrew became convinced that Jesus was the Messiah, he immediately found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus. Later, Philip told Nathanael that he had found the one promised by Moses and the prophets. Nathanael was skeptical, but Philip did not argue with him. He simply replied, “Come and see.” These accounts remind us that evangelism often grows naturally out of relationships. We do not need to have every biblical answer ready or force a spiritual conversation before someone is prepared for it. We can listen, show hospitality, answer questions honestly, and provide opportunities for our friends to observe Jesus at work.
Culture of Invitation
That might mean inviting someone to worship, Bible study, a church meal, or a Christian gathering. It may also mean welcoming someone into our home, praying with a hurting friend, or demonstrating Christ’s forgiveness in a difficult relationship. People are more likely to listen when they know that we genuinely care about them. Our attitude matters. Andrew and Philip spoke with excitement because they believed they had found wonderful news worth sharing. Friendship evangelism is not about treating people as projects. It is about loving them, patiently walking beside them, and trusting the Holy Spirit to work through a simple invitation: “Come and see.”
