Resurrection Reality

Resurrection Reality is the name of our sermon series for the Easter season.  We see how our reality has change when Jesus walked out of the tomb.

What happened… What just happened here?  Let’s review the facts.  You can walk away shaking your head like the disciple Peter if you want, but let’s review the facts.  Jesus is dead.  It was horrible, unjust, unfair, but the fact was he was condemned to die Friday morning by the Roman Governor.  After a six-hour crucifixion, he’s dead.  The Roman spear that plunged into Jesus’ side confirmed what everyone saw that afternoon.  Jesus died.  God died. That’s fact #1.

#2, Jesus’ completely dead body was placed in a new tomb.  You can argue about who helped Joseph of Arimathea with Jesus body.  Or about how exactly Jesus’ body was prepared for burial – was 75 pounds of spices really enough?  Joseph asked Pilate, the Roman governor for the body.  Pilate heard about this resurrection plot from the Jewish leaders and so he gave them his ring so that there would be a tamper proof seal on the tomb, just like you would find at the grocery store.  Pilate even gave them a detachment of soldiers.

Facts #1 and #2, Jesus died, Jesus is in the tomb.  Now for fact #3 from Luke 24.

Vs 1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. The first day of the week would be Sunday – this confuses small children whose first day of the school week is Monday, but the modern calendar still reflects that Sunday is the first day of the week.  These women knew where the body was but they weren’t sure if those men did a good job with the body.  Ladies, do guys always do a good job?  I get why they wanted to “fix up” the body.  When they get to the tomb, first there are no soldiers, second there is no stone, 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.  There’s no body!
