A Real Christmas – Lifts Up The Lowly is the final message from our Advent sermon series. You are just a few days away from the celebration of Jesus’ birth. If you’re keeping score on our Advent calendar all of the boxes up through Mary should be checked today. The excitement reaches a fevered pitch as we see two ladies giggle away in thanks and praise for all that God has done for them.
The Most Famous Woman of All Time
Who is the most famous woman the world has ever seen? Venerated by half of Christendom and all of Islam – the Virgin Mary is right up there. From that point on all generation did and still do call her blessed. It’s really important that we take Mary at her own words. The Magnificat is her prophesy – just a like a psalm, or one of a handful of other songs in Scripture. These inspired words give us insight into her heart and the heart of God.
Mary was a Sinner
There was nothing in Mary that set her apart from the other teenage girls of her day. She was lowly and humble – this goes beyond the abject poverty that she struggled through, like most of God’s people in the ancient world. Mary was a sinner. That is why with all joy she could say – 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, Not only did God keep his promise that she would conceived a child – just as the angel said. God kept his promise to Mary to send her a Savior. She is not the co-redemptrix who helped Jesus pay for the sins of the world. That honor and worship is reserved alone for Jesus. That is what she does in the Magnificat – the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
