Because He Lives – Good Shepherd

Because He Lives – Good Shepherd takes us face to face with sheep.  You might feel like you’re looking in the mirror.  There are many similarities between God’s children and sheep.  On this Good Shepherd Sunday we are reminded that Jesus is our Good Shepherd.  He laid down his life that we might be forgiven.

Loud and Clear

Did you know that sheep have very poor eyesight?  That is why it’s possible for sheep to starve and die of thirst when food and water are just around the corner.  But they have excellent hearing.

Today I see a little flock of God’s sheep, I include myself with you.  I have a confession to make – there are times I hear voices. I know it sounds crazy, but bear with me while I explain.  I hear voices from without. They whisper. They beg for allegiance.  They woo. They taunt. They tantalize. They flirt. They flatter. Saying things like . . .      “Go ahead, it’s OK.”   “It’ll wait until tomorrow.”   “Don’t worry, no one will know.”   “You deserve better than this.”  “You have every reason to be angry!”

At times it seems like an endless chorus of booming voices: some offering, some taking.  Some for pleasure. Some for power. Some promise acceptance. Some promise tenderness.  But all promise something.

Admit It

Go ahead . . . admit it. You’ve heard these voices, too.  As sheep, you also have excellent hearing.  How do we deal with voices?  Some seek psychotherapy.  Some look inside a bottle. Others just give in.

Jesus once said that the mark of a disciple is his or her ability to recognize and hear the Good Shepherd’s voice. I have come to appreciate that there’s no chorus so loud that the voice of God cannot be heard . . . if we will but listen to him speak.
