Epiphany Moments – Identity

Epiphany Moments – Identity is the first in our new series for a new season for the New Year!  Please click HERE to watch the video introducing the series.  Epiphany means reveal.  Each week we’ll look at a different portion of Scripture that reveals our incredible God.  Today we needs to hit a small detail…

Chopstick Problem

Were you aware that China’s ministry of commerce, along with five other government agencies, is cracking down on disposable chopsticks.  Before you dismiss this as government at its worst – China does have devastating floods, a massive oil spill, and 3000 barrels of chemicals bobbing in a northeastern river.  Why are we focusing on disposable chopsticks?  When you do the math it’s startling.

Start with 1.3 billion people who every year go through 45 billion pairs of chopsticks; that’s 130 million pairs of chopsticks a day.  Or roughly one hundred acres of trees sacrificed every twenty-four hours…  for chopsticks.  Deforestation is a very real problem – think devastating floods.

Maybe this is a real problem in China.  I hope you can see I’m not so concerned with your use of disposable chopsticks as I am your enslavement by and falling prey to the deception of the devil.  It is your little chopstick sins that add up to the point that you either separate yourself from your God by unrepentant sin – I’m sinning; I like it – or… when the weight of your chopstick sins burdens you so much, you question your place in the Holy Christian Church and sadly I’ve heard Christians question their own conversion.

Divine Solution

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, The kindness and love of God our Savior is Jesus.  Jesus is the personification and clearest expression of God’s love.  This text is usually used for?  Any guesses?  When would we celebrate the appearance of God’s love in the world, surrounded by animals, in a stable, in a manger, with shepherds coming to worship at Bethlehem, with angels singing in the heavens.  This verse is Christmas.  Christmas isn’t sugarplums and reindeer, but the appearance of the kindness and love of God our Savior.  Our Lord took care of the little chopstick sins that add up to a crushing weight on our souls and the big ones that everyone sees.
