Followership – Powerful Allies is a look into the world of angels. This Sunday we celebrated the minor festival of St. Michael and All Angels – also known as Michaelmas.
Some Things You Don’t Want To See
I have never seen an angel. I’m good actually, God – I know he’s listening. I officially am really good with never seeing an angel. Every time in the Bible a person sees an angel – face-to-face – what the reaction? It’s terror. The angel says don’t be afraid. Remember you go back and Elisha says don’t be afraid because he knows the angels are there. How does he know this if he can’t see them? God said they were there. The Christian takes God at his word.
God has not promised you that you will see angels in this life – you don’t need to. God made a special allowance for this servant because he loved him.
The F-18 of The Lord
You might be saying – chariots and horsemen… that’s odd. I thought angels were wearing white robes holding flaming swords. That’s not a bad one either. I’ve shown you videos in our after worship Bible study of angels going into Sodom and Gomorrah as knife wielding ninjas who got lot and his family out of dodge before the fire from heaven set the place ablaze. Personally – depending on the application, of course – I’m all about the flaming F-18 angel. Those are really cool. The point of the flaming chariots and horsemen was to show the servant that he wasn’t alone. Not only does God have this handled – the other guys are the one outnumbered and surrounded – not you.
Do Something!
And if you read just a couple verses down the page – the angels don’t do anything. Elisha says a quick prayer, the whole army is struck blind, crisis averted. It’s a quick read and an awesome story of God’s grace to nation of Israel and a king who had fallen away from the worship of the Lord. Don’t let that be a disappointment – just because the angels don’t go full ninja mode and slaughter the army doesn’t mean that God hasn’t accomplished his goal of keeping Elisha safe.
