Identity Revealed – Transfiguration brings the season of Epiphany to a close. We need to see Jesus bright as the sun on the mountain before we start our journey through the wilderness. Lent is a hard time as we focus on our sin and the suffering of our Savior.
Laws and More Laws
When Moses went and told the people all the LORD’s words and laws, God had given Moses the ten commandments, the civil laws – who they could marry, how the camp would operate, and the ceremonial laws – eating kosher, the Sabbath rules, the priesthood. The people liked it. they responded – like Sunday school children – with one voice, “Everything the LORD has said we will do.” 4 Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said. Nothing would be changed or altered AND if anyone forgot something they could go back and look it up.
I Try to Be Good
AND before we’re too critical of the childlike answer of the Israelites know that most people still today say that they try to live a good life. I bet most people would even try to keep the big ten, right? Don’t kill folks. Don’t steal from people. But very quickly these break down. For example the IRS estimates that this year over $6 billion was refunded to people incorrectly. One shining example was a Kuna, ID couple, Andrea and Kent Shannon. They submitted fake checks to the IRS to the tune of $57. That’s REALLY bad, but God’s Law leaves no room for even a single penny to be stolen from Uncle Sam. Extreme you say? Our God is holy and perfect in every way. He cannot remain holy and ignore sin at the same time.
Break Just One Little Piece
So that means every angry thought that remained unspoken about your sibling or spouse or neighbor, would damn you to hell. Every lustful image that lingers in your mind, would damn you to hell. Our God says even if you break just one little piece of his Law it’s as if you’ve broken all of it. He warns us through the prophet Ezekiel, 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. If you see God’s law as hopeless you’re in a great spot! You’ve got less of a chance of keeping God law than you do beating this guy across the pool and back.
