Imminent Arrival – Immanuel

Imminent Arrival – Immanuel is the final stop in our Advent march to the manger.  This stop is a little out of place.  We aren’t going to Mary or Elizabeth.  This is a trip to a wicked king.

Be Careful What You Don’t Wish For

10 Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the LORD your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” God knew that Ahaz would not believe a promise so he gives him an amazing offer. Ask me for a sign, anything and I’ll do it to prove to you that I am in control and powerful. I will save my people.

Listen to Ahaz’ response, 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test.” What is so disgusting about Ahaz’ comment is that he makes himself sound like a believing Jew. If Ahaz didn’t want to put the Lord to the test, why would he lead his people – God’s people into idol worship? Why would he murder his own children? Why would he trust the Assyrians above the LORD God?

Ask For Something

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? Isaiah can’t believe his ears. He doesn’t waste anytime with Ahaz, but tells him that he is testing God. It is never wise to go against what God commands. He gives us commands for our good, but it is the height of foolishness to reject a gift from God. The greatest gift God gives us is forgiveness in the gospel, to reject that is the only unforgivable sin – because you are rejecting God’s forgiveness. It would be like us refusing the gifts from the UPS man brings us, and then complaining that our relatives don’t love us and haven’t given us anything.
