Say It Out Loud – Fight The Good Fight is the final from our summer sermon series on our confessions of faith. The overarching theme for the readings this Sunday was Love God Above All. Both the Old Testament and Gospel readings were intense! God’s Old Testament people were being struck down by the sword for idolatry. In the Gospel Jesus talks about the divisions that will happen in someone’s house over the word of God! That brings us to our sermon, and our intense spiritual training as we fight the good fight.
Pursue The Kid With The Ball
When I coached soccer for 12 years it was difficult to get the kids to see practice as an important exercise. Just kicking the ball around the cone seems like a waste of time. There is no pressure, no cheering fans, no kid from the other team trying to take the ball. One of my favorite drills was the breakaway. You needed to take the ball to the goal and score on the keeper. What do you think the kids did during this drill. Oh my, with a snails pace they dribbled up to the keeper. So we fixed this by having one child pursue the kid on the break away. Like a wildebeest being chased by a lion that kid went streaking to the goal and most of the time he missed. Terrible touches, bad shots, maybe the kid behind caught up, but the drill was good because it was real.
Life Is Hard
Soccer is a very hard game. So is life. When God says pursue righteousness, get after it. You will miss often. Remember what Christians do when we fail, when we sin? We repent because we know that there is forgiveness in Jesus. That is why we pursue righteousness, out of thanks for all that Jesus has done for us. Do you know what that looks like? Anytime someone asks me, he burned a conscience onto your heart to help point you the right way. You’re vocation, wherever God has placed you in life is a great place to start. The Ten Commandments are a happy summary.
