Tell Us A Story – of Insane Rejection is the final message in our series on Jesus’ parables. The parables from these past three weeks were told rapid fire to Jesus’ enemies and they all fit together.
The parable of the two sons – that perfect, simple, short parable – even Jesus’ enemies picked up the meaning immediately. One son say I will go, but doesn’t. Another say I won’t go but does. Who actually did the will of the father? The son who finally did as the father asked, obviously, but neither is really a good example. That parable was about John the Baptist and his ministry. John called both sons into the kingdom of heaven – those who look good and those who don’t.
The next parable – the tenants and the vineyard – builds on the last. This was about Jesus’ ministry. How reckless of our God to risk everything and send his Son to a fallen world that hated him. How great is the love of the father. Do you remember how that parable ended? The Son was dead – the leaders of the Jews condemned themselves. The owner of the vineyard will bring those wretches to a wretched end.
Finally we have before us the third parable. The first was about John the Baptist, the second about Jesus. What about this third parable? Listen to the first two verses. 1Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2“The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. Whoah, how did the previous parable leave the son? He was very dead. How’s he doing now? He’s not just alive. He’s getting married!
You don’t need to dig too deeply into Scripture to find the corresponding imagery. The first parable was about John the Baptist, the second our Lord and Savior Jesus. This last one is about the ministry of the church. Jesus lives! We live in that reality of the resurrection!
