Undivided Attention – Heavenly Treasure takes us down the path of anxiety. What are you worried about?
I mentioned that God appeared to Abram four times. Let me list off those events and where Abram was each time.
• The first was when Abram was back in Ur of the Chaldeans, modern day Iraq we believe.
• The second was in Haran about half way to the Promised Land of Canaan. At the time of this second visit from God, Abram is already 75 and Sarai was 65 – people lived a little longer back then, but by this time their biological clock must be going off.
• The third time was after he reached the promised land of Canaan.
• The fourth time was after he and his nephew Lot parted company because God had blessed them with so much stuff. In each of these visions God gives Abram a promise about the Promised Land and about his descendants. Lot then get carried off in a war and Abram, probably pushing 85 years old goes off with a few servants and routes the attacking kings rescuing Lot.
• Next comes our text, with this vision from God – Abram I am your shield, your very great reward.
Abram knows about the Lord’s protecting hand, he had just gone to war to rescue a family member. He knows that God is his greatest reward, that he had been blessed beyond his wildest dreams. But there is still one problem… 2 O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.
Can you hear the despair in Abram’s voice? His heart was failing. He doesn’t lash out in anger he doesn’t mope and pout. He brings his trouble to his Father in heaven with a heavy heart.
