Undivided Attention – Holy Trinity

Undivided Attention – Holy Trinity starts a new summer sermon series!  Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox Babe, Pecos Bill, yes even Chuck Norris – these stories have been lumped together into what we call folklore. Legends. Fantasy. The words from our Romans 5 text are no less fantastic, and were it not for the power of the Holy Spirit, just as impossible to believe.  We just mentioned that God is powerful.  It’s important for us to mention that we are powerless.

Riding A Bike

One of my children left their bike in the back yard.  I could’ve walked up to the front, but I know how to ride a bike.  I jumped right on and pedaled as fast as I could.  The problem is that when I went to turn into the driveway and the garage the chain came off – turns out that I bent the frame.  This was Luke’s bike – oops.  I had broken the bike.  I had no reason to be on the bike.  It was completely my fault.  I couldn’t fix it.  Every time I tried to re threat the chain, it would fall off because the whole frame was bent.  I was powerless to fix it.

That’s Ok, Dad

No big deal, right – just go get another bike.  You can find them at garage sales, or even retail, they aren’t that expensive.  Buying a new bike may work for Luke, but it doesn’t work for God.  God’s standard is perfection.  Once I carelessly broke the bike, even if I could’ve fixed it, I can’t take away the wrong, the sin.  Even if Luke would’ve said – that’s ok dad.  It wouldn’t be ok with God.  The problem is that my sin was so big.  I don’t think any of you – and honestly I wasn’t that worried either.  We look at people and have this sliding scale of good and bad.  There are big sins and little sins.  There are big sinners and little sinners.  God works on a pass fail system.  Either you’re perfect or your hell bound.  Every sin is so big.  Every single sin damns.  God knows how you think.  He also knows everyone of your sins.  That’s why he says…  Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
