Wounds That Heal – The Word of God Divides

Wounds That Heal – The Word of God Divides starts a new summer sermon series for us.  Not all of God’s word is peaches and cream.  Some of Scripture is a harsh words for those who would lead people away from God.  This is what we find in our sermon from Jeremiah.

Where Is You God?

23 “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the LORD, “and not a God far away? 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the LORD.

God is everywhere. Or, you could say, there is no place where God is not. You cannot hide from God. It’s interesting that he doesn’t say this. He asks questions that should have had obvious answers for the Jews. Of course God is everywhere. How can I hide from a God who fills the universe?

Most people in Jeremiah’s day believed that a god was only powerful in certain areas – such as a god of the sea or god of the mountains or plains. For example people would worship at the high places, the tops of hills because they felt that at a greater elevation they were closer to their god. God reveals something far different for us. He doesn’t just protect us here at church, but on the road, in our homes, during a storm or sickness. He is always by our side whether we’re sleeping, working, or playing.

God Can See Everything

I have already tipped my hand as to how I see God’s constant presence – It’s wonderful. But there is another way to look at this. If God really can see everything, if God is always by my side, if he can hear the thoughts I whisper in my head, God can see… even the bad things.

For the false prophet or unbeliever there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. They might think, “God’s Law will crush me like a hammer if I have to acknowledge the sins that I’ve done.” It’s much easier to think, “God can’t see what I do – after all no one else can.” But that’s a lie. Many people would rather believe a lie than face the reality of their sinful life.
